It’s no secret that for many years homosexuality was considered a disease. It was recognized as a psychiatric diagnosis. But, nevertheless, these times are over. And yet, I would like to remember it today.
The scandalous vote of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), which excluded homosexuality from the list of mental disorders, took place in December 1973. The public is tired! This moment was preceded by the economic crisis, the Vietnam War, technological progress and new trends that promised people freedom. The “Homosexual Liberation Front” was even organized, and riots began in the streets. People with non-traditional sexual orientation decided to loudly declare themselves. Homosexual lobby was powerful, and in specialized media promoted the publications directed against defenders of the physiological concept of sexual attraction. Activists demanded:
1) the end of the negative attitude towards homosexuality on the part of society; 2) homosexuality is not a disease anymore, and not a diagnosis 3) the eradication of widespread “prejudices” on this issue by means of legislative reforms.
